The Strength of Black & White
One of the strengths of black and white photography is it forces the photographer to concentrate on composition. When shooting a photograph for black and white reproduction it is helpful to take time and consider each element and how it relates to other elements in the overall image. One should also take time to look at the quality of light in terms of tonal range, direction and specular quality (for textures) and determine the optimal exposure that will augment these qualities. This reductive exercise will also improve one’s color work when employing the same composition and also introducing the element of color.
